University Giving Opportunities

Supporting our students across the Woodbury community.

Entryway

All gifts and pledges will help secure the future of Woodbury University and shape the futures of our students. Your support is a vote of confidence in our efforts to nurture, challenge and transform the lives of students and allows us to be good stewards of this extraordinary University.

While larger portions of the university operating budget come from tuition and the endowment, The Woodbury University Fund is essential to the financial health of the university. Gifts are unrestricted and support each of our four schools, Student Affairs, academic programs, scholarships, and the library. Your commitment make an immediate difference today! How we apply your investment:

Student Scholarships: Woodbury University is committed to financial accessibility and socioeconomic diversity among its students, and offers competitive merit-based financial aid to top-performing scholars.
Faculty Support: By recruiting and retaining accomplished teacher-scholars, Woodbury ensures that student achievement remains a priority. This support encourages faculty scholarship and enables professors to implement innovative teaching methods in the classroom.
Presidential Priorities: These funds provide unrestricted support that may be used to address the current, most pressing needs and also allows the president to seize immediate opportunities for the benefit of the university. These include:

  • Student travel for study abroad
  • Immersive and hands-on learning experiences for students

According to the USDA, roughly 1 in 7 Americans experiences food insecurity—a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. The negative impacts of food insecurity on both physical and emotional health are well documented and range from anemia and asthma to aggression and suicidal ideation.

At Woodbury University, we believe that no student should ever need to worry about where their next meal is coming from. That’s why we are pleased to introduce the Food for Thought program which provides meals to students who struggle with food insecurity. The program may provide as many as 5 free meals a week at a nearby eatery.

Students struggling with food insecurity can complete and submit the form on this page, with completely confidential submissions.

Social Justice

Woodbury University is committed to building a culture that values diversity, open communication, collaboration and engagement. As part of our commitment to institutional diversity, we are launching a new Social Justice Scholarship Fund that will provide scholarships to undergraduate students from underrepresented groups who are themselves committed to eradicate social injustice and ensure lasting equality, respect, opportunity and justice for all.

New undergraduate students are encouraged to apply for a Woodbury University Social Justice Scholarship who are underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, members of immigrant families, multi-racial, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, from first in generation to attend college and/or educationally disadvantaged families. The scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or creed.

Each School/College shall make applications available and select the recipients.  Private contributions to the Fund will be directed consistent with donor request into four categories:

  • College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • School of Architecture
  • School of Business
  • School of Media, Culture and Design

Student eligibility requirements include:

  • Recipients shall be new students who have enrolled as full-time students in an undergraduate program with financial need.
  • The award is $2,000 for the academic year in which the recipient is enrolled full-time or $1,000 for the academic year for part-time. The awards may be renewable on an annual basis depending on the balance of the Fund.
  • Recipients shall submit an essay that describes their academic goals, intended strategies for attaining the stated goals, and commitment to social justice. The award criteria will include: 1) clarity of purpose; 2) ability to communicate effectively; and, 3) coherence of academic plan.

The Julius Shulman Institute (JSI) is a programming and research unit housed in the School of Architecture at Woodbury University. Julius Shulman was one of the world’s most significant architectural photographers. His work helped to introduce modern architecture, and particularly the work of dozens of renowned Southern California-based architects to a broad populace. His archive, now housed at the Getty Research Institute, provides an unparalleled window into Los Angeles’ mid-twentieth century built history. Shulman established the Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University in 2005 with the goal of promoting an appreciation and understanding of the built environment, particularly as mediated by photography, to aspiring students of design and architecture and to the general public.

Your gift helps support JSI public programming and student activities that promotes photography as a means to understand and appreciate the cultural value and significance of the discipline of architecture from interior architecture to landscape architecture and urban design.

This is in contrast to expendable funds, which are typically used for immediate needs.

Woodbury alumni and friends who want to support the university can do so and reap the income and tax benefits. Planned-giving benefits may include life income, future continued use of gift property, and avoiding capital gains tax as well as providing donors with an immediate income tax deduction.
