On May 4, 2017, Woodbury University’s Julius Shulman Institute will honor photographer Todd Eberle with the prestigious JSI Excellence in Photography Award. Todd Eberle is an acclaimed New York City- based photographer whose work is united by a clean and analytical minimalist aesthetic. Eberle’s subjects run the gamut from political, art, and cultural figures to architectural landmarks and technology. He was Vanity Fair’s Photographer at Large for over 20 years.
In addition to the award, an exhibit of Mr. Eberle’s work, Todd Eberle: Empire of Space, will be at Woodbury University’s Hollywood Outpost (WUHO), from May 4 – June 25th. The opening will be May 4th. The exhibit will feature some of his most well known images of portraits of cultural luminaries Hillary Rodham Clinton, Frank Gehry, Julius Shulman, Florence Knoll Bassett, Martha Stewart, David Adjaye, Peter Zumthor, and Phillip Johnson. Presentation of the award will be by Barbara Bestor, executive director of the JSI at Woodbury University.
According to Eberle, “I learned at a very young age that memorable things are created by individuals with ideas, and that has always been my primary interest; the window, as it were, into a world that could only have been created by those individuals, singularly, or collaboratively. Those that make such a mark are those I’m attracted to making photographs of.” The exhibition will be a focused showcase of portraits of architectural greats and cultural icons.
Eberle gained international recognition for his photographs of Donald Judd’s art and furniture that he made at the artist’s request at The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, and elsewhere around the world in the 1990’s. Those photographs culminated in the book, “Donald Judd Raume/Spaces” (Hatje/Cantz) in 1993. Informed by this experience, Eberle’s photographs are characterized by an ever-present sense of control, proportion, and symmetry.
Previous JSI Excellence in Photography Award honorees include Helene Binet, Iwan Baan, James Welling, and Catherine Opie. Presentation of the award will be by Barbara Bestor, executive director of the JSI at Woodbury University.
