Steven Chodoriwsky recently presented as part of The state of the school of the state, a lecture & workshop at University of Bergen, Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design (KMD), in Bergen, Norway on Nov 8-10, 2017. Steven presented a series of episodes related to his ongoing research work A Campus In Pieces, which examines the shape and substance of the contemporary university campus as a social and performative project. Combining documentary and archival research with in situ performance actions, the work examined the ways in which built structures of higher education are entangled with practices of everyday study and labor.
Bio:
Steven Chodoriwsky is a Canadian artist, designer and educator based in Los Angeles. He teaches architecture, landscape architecture and interiors at Woodbury University and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Previously, he taught at Cornell University, and at the University at Buffalo, where he was the 2016-17 Peter Reyner Banham Fellow.
As a visual artist and researcher, his practice employs a diverse range of media including installation, text, performance and audio-visual artifacts. He has held positions at the Jan van Eyck Academie, The Netherlands, and at the Center for Contemporary Art, Kitakyushu, Japan. He was educated at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, as a recipient of the multi-year Monbukagakusho Government of Japan scholarship.
Chodoriwsky has published texts in Scapegoat, San Rocco, and Informal Market Worlds: Atlas, among others. He is book designer of Costume en Face: A Primer of Darkness for Young Boys and Girls by Tatsumi Hijikata (Ugly Duckling Presse); and co-editor and designer of the recently-published collection This is Not A Wall (Cornell AAP/Actar). He has presented and performed work at international venues including, among others, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, de Appel Arts Centre, and the Suzuki Company of Toga International Theatre Festival.
