As you may already know, Woodbury University enjoys a professional partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the powerhouse studio behind a stunning portfolio of content and brands that span television, film, and streaming platforms.
Not only has this partnership provided strong connections for student internships and career opportunities, but over the past 3 years, the entertainment company has also made contributions to our filmmaking program that allow us to acquire equipment that we otherwise wouldn’t have. In addition, they often film shows on our campus.
Earlier this month, WBD Community Engagement and Strategic Initiatives Manager Maggie McEldowney welcomed Woodbury Professor & Chair of Filmmaking Dr. George Larkin as well as 12 of our students for a studio tour of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Burbank lot, allowing them to immerse themselves in the thrilling world of global entertainment and media as they consider a stunning array of career options available to them through Woodbury’s School of Media : Culture : Design.
The informative trip included a tour via the Warner Bros. Studio Tours department, led by Woodbury alum and current WBD staffer John Conroy, and a chance to meet with alumni Luana Richard and Shant Salkhorian, who also now work for the tour department.
Maggie spoke to the students and also arranged for WBD Executive Vice President of Worldwide Studio Operations Dan Dark to meet and talk with the students. Dan, who is a remarkably accomplished film professional, gave our students fantastic advice on their future careers.
“I am so appreciative of the partnership between our filmmaking program and WarnerBros. Discovery,” says Professor Larkin. “I believe in learning by osmosis, and how could you not learn by visiting such a legendary place and meeting some of the remarkable people who work there? Many struggle to believe they could work at such an amazing place, but after such a trip there, see that they truly can. WBD has been an amazing friend to our program and constantly works for new ways to positively interact with the community. We look forward to exploring future possibilities with them!”
Also in attendance was Dr. Michele Starkey, Woodbury Senior Vice President ofAcademic Affairs + ALO. “I had the pleasure of immersing myself in the world of props and costumes and engaging in insightful conversations with Dan about operations,” recalls Dr. Starkey. “His generosity in sharing his time and expertise with our students speaks volumes about his dedication to shaping the industry’s future. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with Warner Bros. Discovery to foster robust community relationships.”
