WUHO Gallery will present Folded Landscapes on Saturday December 9th from 8:30am-3:00pm. In this workshop students will first learn the basics of the Miura folding pattern, developed as a method of folding large satellite arrays into the space shuttle to be easily unfolded and deployed once in space.

The Miura pattern, along with its variations, will be applied to large flat sheets of paper of the students’ own design, creating a three dimensional ‘landscape’. Techniques will also be taught to apply color to the paper in a loose process, echoing the complexity of a naturally formed environment. The piece will move from plane to terrain and from terrain into territory as the grid created by the folding pattern begins to delineate space within the otherwise ambiguous landscape of the paper. As a final layer, students will take an objective look at the landscape and territory that they have created and take steps to map and define the space through drawing and line work.
The workshop will take place during the day at WUHO Gallery in Hollywood and the work will be hung at the end of the workshop to be displayed in conjunction with the opening of the show There is Only One Paul R. Williams: A Portrait by Janna Ireland the same evening. Workshop materials will be supplied including paper, paints, pens and hanging materials along with transport between the gallery and Woodbury University.
About the Artist
The work of Los Angeles-based artist Jeff Morrical incorporates single sheet paper sculptures shaped by folds and gravity. With a background in architecture, finding form, structure and pattern in everyday materials has always been a driving force in his work. He uses drafting software to design 2-dimensional patterns and graphics on large custom sheets of paper that correspond with the 3-dimensional forms created through the folding process. This synthesis of patterns and folds results in light and whimsical paper forms that take on a life of their own.
