LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 14, 2022) — Woodbury University today announced that its College of Liberal Arts will now be known as the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
According to Reuben J. Ellis, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, this seemingly minor name change reflects a truly significant shift in focus: a growing department-wide emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programming.
“While maintaining our steadfast commitment to providing a solid liberal arts education to all students across a range of disciplines and focused academic preparation in all of our seven majors, this name change highlights that the presence of the sciences in the liberal arts curriculum is vital,” Ellis stated. “The quality of human life and the health of the planet in the 21st century depend on liberally educated citizens having the scientific understanding to make informed assessments of the opportunities offered by science.”
Woodbury’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences majors include History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Political Science, Professional Writing, Public Safety Administration, and Computer Science in Data Analytics — a major that was added in 2020, becoming one of the university’s four computer science programs. In 2023, the College will launch another new program in Environmental Science, one of three new sustainability-oriented fields of study. All of these start-up programs have been set in motion with the help of major Department of Education Title V Hispanic Serving Institution grants.
As a member of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences (AESS), Ellis observed, the newly renamed College of Liberal Arts and Sciences shares the AESS philosophy that “broad advances in environmental knowledge require disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches to research and learning.”
