Professor, Media Studies
Nicole Keating, PhD is a Professor of Media Studies at Woodbury University in Burbank, California. Throughout her career, she has worked as an educator, writer and documentarian. She received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and then joined the faculty of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. After teaching there for nearly a decade, she moved to Los Angeles to work in documentary production. Nicole began teaching at Woodbury in 2011, running the Communication Dept. for four years and starting a graduate program in Media for Social Justice. She has published on topics dealing with media and social change, particularly in relationship to gender issues. Nicole is motivated by a desire to combine her interest in storytelling with a strong commitment to social justice. Her documentary trilogy Three Women in the City of Brotherly Love was shown on public television in Philadelphia.

- Dr. Nicole Keating Speaks at Popular Culture Association Conference
Dr. Keating presented a paper entitled “Sorry Honey, I’m not in the Ads but I’m Real: The Missing Black Housewife in Housewife Humor” as part of a panel on “Gender and Comedy” at the Popular Culture Association Conference in New Orleans, LA in April of 2025. In this intersectional analysis, Dr. Keating examines the aspects of oppression elided by the seemingly enlightened genre of housewife humor, paving the way for more inclusive awareness.
