Professor Hector M. Perez currently has a project in construction in Barrio Logan. Los Patios is a mixed-use four story development with 40 residential units and 2 commercial retail spaces. The project is located in the heart San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood, 3 blocks from Chicano Park and one mile from San Diego’s downtown Ballpark. Home to Chicano Park with its historical murals that was registered a National Historic Monument in 2016, Barrio Logan was designated A California Cultural District in 2018.
The unique design of Los Patios is organized around a large central patio that doubles as communal space and surface parking for the residents. Exterior balconies around the central patio connect to each unit and facilitates natural light and ventilation from both sides of each unit, while balconies on the front and outer perimeter of the building frame expansive views to the working bay, Coronado and downtown skyline. These passive light and ventilation strategies along with the tall spaces offer an artistic yet pragmatic and affordable solution for work-force housing. The central communal patio of the project interlays with the commercial covered space and their sidewalk café extensions allowing much desired interactions between the residents, the commercial patrons and the curated community events in the public right-of-way.
Faculty member Brett Farrow recently completed a residential project in Encinitas that has been featured on several design platforms (featured above). Brett is a licensed architect who designs, builds and develops his own projects ranging from commercial/mixed-use to high-end custom residential. He has been an adjunct faculty at Woodbury University since 2009, and is currently teaching Real Estate Development courses at our San Diego campus. His new development, Laguna Row, is currently underway in Carlsbad Village.
