Sean Joyner (BArch ’16) Appointed School of Architecture Director of Communications

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Sean Joyner (BArch ’16) as Director of Communications for the School of Architecture.

Sean’s qualifications include expertise in architectural digital publication and communication, and experience in architectural practice and design education. Last summer, Sean came to Woodbury as Special Projects Coordinator to help launch an alumni mentoring initiative, chair our reformed Design Justice Committee, and teach in our BArch program.

Since 2019, Sean has served as Editor and Staff Writer at Archinect, the most established online platform for the architecture + design community, featuring editorial and active discussions about pressing and current issues within the discipline. His professional background as a Project Leader and designer on  K-12 and Higher Education projects in Southern California, coupled with his degree from Woodbury’s BArch program, provide him with unique insights into our community and our mission.

Sean has a deep and publicly demonstrated commitment to social justice. Articles such as Equity in Architectural Academia, Thoughts on Black Tokenism in Architectural Practice, and Considering the Architect’s Role in Addressing Homelessness are just a few examples. He has also written about mental health, choosing between architecture schools, and gender discrimination. Sean’s writing often explores themes from history, philosophy, and psychology to uncover lessons for students and professionals.

This is only a sample of the more than 800 articles (!!) that Sean has written at Archinect, which have garnered over 4.4 million total page views. Sean has collaborated with PR teams for various architecture firms and schools worldwide, providing him with rare insight into how Woodbury can best leverage and message its programs. His lively and dynamic style of communication will appeal to a broad audience, including donors and prospective students and their families. His stated interest in and focus on creating a sustainable digital presence for our programs and capitalizing on the power of the press is precisely what we need to move to the next level in reputation, rankings, and enrollment.
