New Publication: Computational Thinking and STEM Education

Dr. Arash Soleimani, the Chair of Design Computation and Applied Computer Science – Media Arts, has published a peer-reviewed article titled “Designing an Interactive Learning Suite for Children: Results from a Usability Study with a Multidisciplinary Research Team” at the International Computing Conference in London, UK.

Dr. Soleimani’s recent publication is the outcome of several years of research aimed at creating modular, interactive learning environments that lay the foundation for computational thinking and spatial reasoning in young learners. This research paper describes a year-long investigation and testing of the final prototype aptly named U-Design. Throughout this period, an in-depth literature review was conducted, exploring educational and teaching frameworks related to cyber-physical learning and knowledge application within STEAM fields. These principles were employed to support the design and manufacturing process of an effective tool capable of explaining complex subjects to children while imparting methods for devising systematic and efficient solutions to real-world problems. The paper presents findings from usability studies and heuristic evaluations of the prototype at key intervals during the process to ensure the achievement of design goals.
