Professor Paulette Singley recently discussed her experience as a Visiting Professor at the American University of Sharjah through an essay on PAW Online. In 2017, Varkki Pallathucheril, dean of the College of Architecture, Art, and Design, invited Singley to attend final reviews in the architecture department at AUS. After learning more about the school and its student body, she accepted an offer from Pallathucheril for a visiting position during the 2017-18 academic year. As Singley states, it would become one of the most exceptional teaching experiences in her life.
Singley mentions in her essay that architectural design is considered to be a feminine vocation in the Emirates, in comparison with engineering, and that the AUS is graduating high numbers of highly driven and talented young women who are rapidly taking over the design profession in this part of the world. She goes on to discuss experiences working with students, the AUS version of Raffaello Sanzio’s “School of Athens”, and her daily experiences with Middle Eastern culture. Singley is an internationally known architectural historian whose work expands the disciplinary limits of architecture across diverse subject matter such as food, film, and fashion.
