Tiny Park Opens in West Hollywood

Tiny Park is a recent project installed in West Hollywood by Sonny Ward and Malek Aqadi of June Street Architecture, and Woodbury professor Jeanine Centuori, FAIA, of UrbanRock Design. The tiny park installations follow the installation of the WeLoveWeHo micro-park and selfie spot at West Hollywood City Hall, which aims to bring people together whether they are standing next to it or logging in through social media.

The City of West Hollywood’s “Tiny Parks” are part of a pilot program to add temporary play space. The new micro park is located at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and North Gardner Street, is the second of four planned installations and consists of pink metal boxes with cupholders, graphics, and the hashtag #tinypark. Each tiny park serves as interactive furniture that encourage passers-by to engage with the space. Sited next to Astro, the project has been utilized as a dining space, a place to play chess or checkers, and as a small space to relax on public land. The “tactical urbanism” approach creates a usable area to gather, socialize and interact.

Tiny parks and WeLoveWeHo are the first of four installations, which are expected to remain in place for 12 to 18 months.
