The Dr. Kenneth R. Nielsen Endowed Scholarship Fund

Kenneth R. Nielsen, Ed.D., served as President of Woodbury University from 1996 until 2012. Under Dr. Nielsen’s leadership, Woodbury was transformed by major construction projects for the School of Business and the School of Architecture, the establishment of a San Diego campus, our designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the creation of the Julius Shulman Institute and the Arid Lands Institute, and strengthening our reputation in the Southern California region. Embracing the university’s tradition of entrepreneurship, Dr. Nielsen’s bold leadership, vision and collaboration with students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends strengthened academic quality, increased enrollment, and provided a solid financial base through a growing endowment. Under Dr. Nielsen’s tenure, Woodbury has become the university that is educating the next generation of students representing the incredible social, ethnic, and economic diversity of our region. The Dr. Kenneth R. Nielsen Scholarship Fund was established in 2012, when Rose Nielsen biked 2,000 miles over 12 months and raised more than $200,000. The fund honors the legacy of Ken and Rose Nielsen for their many accomplishments at Woodbury. This scholarship fund supports Woodbury University School of Architecture students in their study away experiences throughout the world.

The Nick Roberts Endowed Scholarship Fund

Nicholas W. “Nick” Roberts was an accomplished architect and inspirational Woodbury Architecture faculty member. He lived life to the fullest until passing away of ALS in September 2013. Nick’s significant contributions to the field included his works on the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the Los Angeles Convention Center Expansion Project, and the John Spoor Broome Library at CSU Channel Islands as well as his book “Building Type Basics for Places of Worship“ published by Wiley. From 2003 until his passing in 2013, Nick was a much-admired professor at Woodbury School of Architecture. He also served as interim chair of the undergraduate program before his passing. Nick enjoyed inspiring his students and his adventurous spirit drove him to travel around the world, which led to his founding Woodbury University’s study abroad program in China.

Nick’s family created this endowed scholarship fund to honor his legacy as an architect, faculty member, and passionate believer in student experiential learning. Nick’s legacy lives on with the Nick Roberts Endowed Scholarship Fund which is designed to support Woodbury School of Architecture students in their study away experiences throughout the world.
