Dear Campus Community:

As many of you are already aware, there is an outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan, China, that has been identified to be caused by a novel (NEW) coronavirus (2019-nCoV). There are ongoing investigations by many countries to learn more about the outbreak, and the situation is rapidly evolving.

Woodbury University is working closely with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health), federal, state, and local partners including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and health care providers to monitor the ongoing situation.

The LA County Department of Public Health advises that the most effective method of prevention is to wash your hands. To reduce the chances of viral infection, especially now that the influenza season is in full swing, we recommend the following preventive measures:

  • Wash your hands often with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds and thoroughly dry them.
  • Avoid touching your ears, nose, and mouth.
  • Sneeze and cough into a tissue or your elbow. Afterwards throw away any tissue and wash your hands.
  • If you are feeling ill stay home, and do not share eating utensils, toothbrushes, etc. with others.

Currently, the CDC does not recommend the wearing of masks for community members. If you choose to wear a mask the LA County of Public Health advises the following steps be taken: masks should be worn at all times, do not reuse masks once they have been taken off, and change your mask often. Woodbury University would like to remind everyone that there is no immediate threat and no special precautions are advised at this time. The washing of hands is still the most effective preventative measure.

Woodbury University continues to monitor this evolving situation and will update the community as necessary. For more information please visit: CDC or LADPH.

If you are concerned about your health or have questions please call the First Aid Station at 818.252.5238 or your local health care provider.
