WUHO: A 5th Ecology

Woodbury University Hollywood Outpost will open with its first show of the Fall 2017 series on Saturday, September 9th at 6:00pm with A 5th Ecology curated by Scrap Marshall & Berenika Boberska. A 5th Ecology invites over 25 architects, artists and designers to explore ways in which Reyner Banham’s reading of Los Angeles can inform our inquiry of the city today.

In 1971, the noted British architectural historian Reyner Banham wrote his seminal book on the city—Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies. In 1972, Banham returned to Los Angeles with a BBC documentary crew to film a homage to the city with which he was so enthralled. Using Baede-Kar—a fictitious audio tour guide—Banham drove across Los Angeles meeting artists, filmmakers, and diner waitresses, enthusiastically extolling the qualities of the sprawling metropolis. In so doing, Banham, the auto-flanuer, part historian and part provocateur, created a new form of critic and an alternative model for studying the city. ‘A 5th Ecology’ examines the under-exposed history of the sprawling metropolis and how to use it as a lens through which to view the city.

A 5th Ecology is sponsored by Walker Workshop, a Los Angeles based design-build firm founded by Noah Walker. Find out more about Walker Workshop Design Build online.

About WUHO

Located on the iconic Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame, the Woodbury University Hollywood gallery (WUHO) provides a welcoming space for multi-disciplinary, boundary-crossing collaboration that supports the study and practice of the design disciplines. WUHO is committed to hosting exhibitions that reposition important voices in architecture and design often overlooked by mainstream sources. In a city that notably does not have a permanent architecture collection in any of its major museums, WUHO provides a venue for emerging designers who would not otherwise have an opportunity to publicly display work. Woodbury University has occupied this 7500 square foot storefront and studio space since 1995 and provides free gallery programming throughout the year. The facility is shared with the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design.
