Help Woodbury Build Rain Gardens April 19-20

Woodbury University students participating in the Urban Green Interventions (UGI) class will be unveiling three California Native Rain Garden projects at local middle schools after a semester-long partnership between TreePeople and the university’s AridLands Institute and Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies.

Students at Water Reed Middle School (North Hollywood), Robert A. Millikan Middle School (Sherman Oaks) as well as Andrew Carnegie Middle School (Carson) were taught by the Woodbury student Interventionists about water scarcity, water conservation, the wisdom of storm water-capturing and drought-tolerant landscapes ultimately resulting in a community designed rain native garden.

UGI focuses on expanding the role of university students in the community through a series of educational and hands-on interventions, placing the university student in the role of educator, facilitator, and project manager. Based on research, readings, and analysis, Interventionists put theory into practice, visualized data, and incorporate these lessons into a practicum/curriculum.

Barry Talley, professor and director of UGI, stated, “Working in the field to advocate for better water and energy practices, UGI interventionists undertook a semester long curriculum with client middle school students, focusing on water and energy better practices in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the restoration of California native habitat.” Talley has previously introduced this curriculum with the assistance of TreePeople and the Arid Lands Institute in the Burbank Unified School District. Talley is one of the primary leaders and innovators in sustainability projects at the grassroots level in the Southern California area.
