Graphic Design Professor, Cate Roman Researches the History of the Los Angeles Grocery Store

Artist, designer and educator, Cate Roman’s current research embraces multiple oral histories collected from Russian Jewish immigrants who settled in the Greater Los Angeles Area during the 1930’s and started the first series of grocery stores which stocked different kinds of provisions from assorted places and cultures, including prepared foods. She is working on an installation combining information graphics and sculpture exploring these overlooked histories and the impact of the shift from individual specialized stores – produce, meat, liquor, etc. – to a grocery store that carries multiple items. A publication of imagery and narratives will also accompany this installation opening in Spring 2013.
