Faculty Member, Cate Roman’s Sculpture Three Bales

Faculty member, Cate Roman’s sculpture Three Bales has been chosen from some 600 works of art for participation in the Brand Library’s 40th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper.  Fascinated by the imperfections in written or spoken communication, Cate creates work inspired by language. These sculptural works use words to explore visual structure as a replacement for verbal dialogue. Creating a conversation between intuition and information, these objects are lyrical sequences, which express that which the artist is intensely aware of, but cannot put into words. The abstracted and ambiguous sculptures use both presence and absence of language to articulate the experience of word combinations. The results are objects that create puzzles, which are not necessarily intended to be resolved. Brand 40: Works on Paper will run from September 17th through October 28, 2011. Opening reception September 17, 2011 6 pm – 9 pm. Brand Library Art Gallery 1601 West Mountain St. Glendale, CA 91201. www.brandlibrary.org.
