Communication Faculty Presents in Nigeria

The Department of Communication’s “Real Peace in Real Time” game project was unveiled recently in Nigeria by adjunct faculty member and social media expert Teri Thompson. The forum of the presentation was the 1st Unijos International Conference on Africa, Media, and Peace-Building. This exciting and cutting-edge initiative was developed in an upper-division collaborative seminar alongside students from Hanze University in the Netherlands. Focusing on the South Sudan, students sought to build sustainable post-conflicts communities through the use of interactive game technology and social media directed to 10-14 year-olds. Characters, personalities, play routines, and learning outcomes specifically targeted the goal of inclusion as a way to address the widespread increase in physical and mental disability arising from social trauma. Faculty input from across campus covered a wide range of fields including media psychology, entertainment studies, and cultural anthropology.
