Professor Appointed To New California Tax Board
Woodbury University professor John Karayan, J.D., Ph.D., has been appointed to the new Board of Advisors to the California State Board of Equalization (SBE). The SBE oversees state tax appeals, and also administers all of California’s various taxes except for the State’s income taxes, which are administered by the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB). Dr. Karayan is the only academic to be appointed the new board, as well as the only person to serve on the advisory boards for both the SBE and the FTB. Formerly director of taxes of a New York Stock Exchange-listed high tech multinational (which was then one of the world’s largest software concerns), Dr. Karayan is a tax attorney with a "Big 8" CPA firm background who retired from practice to become a university professor.
He has spoken and written extensively on multistate taxation. For example, he authored the first two chapters of the new Lexis/Nexis Matthew Bender treatise, State and Local Taxation. He also co-authored Swenson, et al., State & Local Tax Planning (J. Ross & Sons).
