No Avoiding the Tax Man, But Woodbury University’s VITA Program Offers Free Tax Prep Assistance
No Avoiding the Tax Man, But Woodbury University’s VITA Program Offers Tax Prep Assistance – Free -- to Eligible Community Members
To Complete Federal and State Forms, Help is Available on Campus Through April 12
It’s tough enough paying taxes, but prepping that tax return can be a headache all its own.
This season, however, relief is on the way, in the form of the VITA Program – Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, a collaborative effort of the Woodbury University School of Business, and the Accounting Society. Via VITA, tax filers in Burbank who make less than $52,000 annually are eligible for tax preparation assistance – totally free of charge -- on campus, every Saturday from Feb. 8 through April 12.
All tax returns are prepared by trained and IRS-certified student volunteers who are committed to serving the community. Team members are fluent in Armenian, Spanish, Russian and Thai, in addition to English.
“VITA provides free tax preparation assistance to families and individuals in the community who aren’t able to pay for these services, while offering our students internship credit,” said Dr. Andre van Niekerk, Dean, Woodbury University School of Business. “It’s a wonderful example of civic engagement, one of Woodbury University’s four pillars. We’re looking forward to making a meaningful impact in our community this tax season."
The VITA certification process is rigorous and requires a significant commitment of time. All students must complete an exam that lasts 6-8 hours. Upon certification, students are able to complete not only the Federal Form 1040 but California tax returns as well.
The VITA Program was last offered a decade ago. At that time, student volunteers completed some 500 tax returns in three different locations around Burbank. This season, all work will be performed on campus to facilitate the electronic filing of returns.
